UNIT 8 3D Workshop: Layering

The last piece of experimentation I would produce in the 3D workshop was using the technique of layering. Throughout my contextual research layering has been a reoccurring theme as Maya Lin, Martin Jenkins and Peter Clark all used layering in a form to create their art works. I decided to recreate the cityscape of New York City - using my photographs from a recent visit. To create the maquette there were a few steps involved in the process and some health and safety was required.

NY cityscape (own image)
Step 1. Cut up MDF into small pieces using the band saw;
eye protection is required and you must be careful of the blade.

Step 2. Using the photographs as a guide I layered the MDF pieces atop of each other to recreate the cityscape.

Step 3. Carefully glue all pieces together and onto the base accurately.

Although this maquette was a little rushed and isn't of the greatest quality I believe the technique is still effective and I'm really keen to further explore layering to develop my ideas. Perhaps I could combine layering with the copper transfers I wanted to explore further.
